Instant Message Reference

You can ask a Wright Library Reference Librarian a question by sending an instant message during library hours.

When the library is closed, you can still get questions answered at KnowItNow on the Reference & Research page.

What is Instant Messaging?

Instant Messaging, or "IMing," is a way of communicating over the Internet. A virtual conversation is held by typing messages back and forth.

How do I IM a librarian?

Use the IM Reference Widget. Begin by clicking the text area labeled "Type here" and entering your message. To send the message, hit Enter on your keyboard. If you wish, you can provide your name in the "Nickname" field.

If you already use an IM service, you can add the Library to your buddy list. Here are our screen names for four different services.

How quickly will a librarian respond to my message?

We will answer as quickly as possible on a first-come, first-serve basis. If we are helping other patrons, we will attempt to let you know how long you may have to wait. Sometimes we will be offline, even during library hours, because we are busy with patrons in the library. If this occurs or you are not getting an answer, please call us at 294-7171, email us (reference@wrightlibrary.org), or stop by the Reference Desk.

What kind of questions can I ask?

Any type of reference question is welcome. Questions requiring short, factual answers are most appropriate for IM Reference. If a question requires more in-depth research, we may request an email address or phone number where we can reach you later.

Should I be concerned about sharing personal information with the Reference Staff using IM?

All interactions between patrons and staff are strictly confidential, no matter what communication method is employed. We do not save instant messaging session logs or email messages. However, IM is not a completely secure method of communication, so please use your best judgment concerning what you choose to send.
