Peace Week 2018: Disturbing the Peace

This February, Wright Memorial Public Library will host Peace Week 2018, a series of events designed to create community dialogue about conflict resolution and peace. We are proud to bring the filmmakers of the award-winning documentary "Disturbing the Peace" to Dayton for a film screening & discussion on Feb. 8 followed by a workshop on Feb. 11 to enable the community to explore concepts developed in the documentary.

Piece by Peace: Youth Art Event 
Peace Week begins with a drop-in program that combines music and art. Children and teens will be provided air-dry clay to craft, as inspired by the Library's custom playlist of peace-related music. A collection of books on peace, conflict resolution, and mediation will also be on display. Drop in during library hours (Friday 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.) to participate! Pieces will be displayed at the Library for a few weeks, then may be picked up by their artists.

The documentary film, Disturbing the Peace, follows former enemy combatants – Israeli soldiers from elite units and Palestinian fighters, many of whom served years in prison – who have joined together to challenge the status quo and say “enough.” The film reveals their transformational journeys from soldiers committed to armed battle to nonviolent peace activists, leading to the creation of Combatants for Peace.

The movie challenges all of us – to understand the narratives we live within, to look at our current roles in our societies, and to decide what role we are going to play in creating a more humane world, for all. And it starts with our willingness to disturb the peace.
